What is RIRS?

It is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to treat kidney stones and other urological conditions. During RIRS, a flexible endoscope is passed through the patient's urinary tract to reach the kidney, where the surgeon can visualize and treat the condition without making any incisions.

Purpose

RIRS is primarily used for the removal of kidney stones, especially those that are difficult to reach or too large for natural passage. It is also used to address other urological conditions, such as tumors or strictures, within the kidney. It offers several advantages, including reduced patient discomfort, quicker recovery times, and lower risk of complications compared to traditional surgery. It is particularly suitable for patients with smaller stones or those who are not suitable candidates for other treatment methods.

Methodology

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia or sedation. A flexible video endoscope is inserted through the urethra, bladder, and then into the ureter, reaching the kidney's collecting system. The surgeon uses a holmium laser to break down the kidney stones or address the urological condition. Any stone fragments or debris are then removed or naturally flushed out through the urinary tract.
